IF Comp 2014: Arqon (H. J. Hoke)

Arqon is a combat-heavy fantasy RPG based on the combat and magic code from Reliques of Tolti-Aph. I played for a while, but eventually died in combat, and did not then restart.

Here is what the blurb tells us:

Times were much simpler before you became an assassin for the Bureau of Magic, but they were a bit more complicated as well. You were on the run, and you couldn’t live in your sanctuary forever. And thus your adventure begins.

In other words, this is going to be pretty generic fantasy. The combat basis becomes evident when you get started.

This is one of those projects that I feel a bit bad reviewing. On the one hand, there are a bunch of bugs and mis-implementations, and the story and setting are fairly thin and implausible. There’s not that much to the game other than a series of combat encounters, but due to the weapons, armor, and spells provided, quite often both opponents spend many turns not landing any hits, which makes for fairly dull combat play. This is not, therefore, terribly recommendable for most players.

On the other hand, this game is so evidently a labor of creative love. It comes with a couple long files of backstory, and these excited instructions in help, and the author shares that they suffer a visual impairment, which presumably explains some of the spelling and spacing glitches in the game.

Here is my favorite passage from the game:

You awaken from a deep sleep. You dream of golden spiders and evil enchanters. Regardless, you must check the mail.
